How to Write a First Message That Actually Gets a Reply
You matched with someone interesting, and now you're staring at an empty chat box. A great first message isn't about being clever. It's about showing you paid attention.
Why "hey" doesn't work
Popular profiles receive dozens of messages that say "hey", "hi" or "what's up". None of them give the other person anything to reply to, so they have to do all the work of starting the conversation. Most of those messages are simply ignored.
Mention something from their profile
The easiest way to stand out is to pick one detail from their photos or bio and ask about it. A travel photo, a pet, a favorite book or a hobby are all perfect starting points. Compare these two openers:
"Hey, how are you?"
"Is that the Amalfi coast in your second photo? I've wanted to go there for years."
The second one is personal, easy to answer and shows you're interested in them, not just in matching.
Ask an open question
Questions that start with "what", "where" or "how" invite a real answer. Questions that can be answered with yes or no usually end the conversation after one reply. Instead of "Do you like hiking?", try "What's the best hike you've ever done?"
Keep it short and light
Two or three sentences is plenty. A long first message can feel like pressure. Save your best stories for when the conversation is already flowing.
Be yourself
Copy and paste lines can work once or twice, but people can usually tell. A simple, honest message in your own words feels much more inviting. If you want to practice, create a free profile on a site we recommend and send your first message today.
